Abidal was Trained at Lyon-Duchère, a team playing in the suburbs of Lyon. In the Lyon defense, he played alongside other French internationals (Grégory Coupet, François Clerc, and Anthony Reveillere) and two Brazilian internationals (Cris and Caçapa).
